Scotty’s Retreat is a tribute to an unforgettable and all around sportsman. Nationally known for his collection of baits and reels, Drane Scott fished the lakes and streams of Indiana, Tennessee and Wisconsin but his favorite lake lay nestled in a wooded area in Bullitt County, Kentucky, To protect the privacy of his friend, the owner, Mr. Scott referred to the lake in his numerous fishing articles as Bullitt County Farm Pond .
For the many Kentuckians who also fished there through the generosity of the owner, the lake, largest of four on the property, was a haven that offered relaxation away from the pressures of daily living. On cool evenings, those who travelled the tree-lined, rocky road that wound through farmlands, cut through creek beds and swung narrowly up steep slopes were rewarded at the curve of the final hill by a welcoming sight of the fireplace blazing within the impressive A frame structure overlooking the lake.
For many years Drane Scott thought of capturing the memory of his lake retreat. Both he and his wife, Ruth, brought in ten pound trophy lunkers from the waters plentiful in brim and bass and they formed strong friendships with those who shared their like interests in the Kentucky outdoors. In 1975 Drane Scott commissioned the work to the artist and Sctty’s Retreat thus became an award winning reality.
Deer, quail, rabbit, squirrel and dove still inhabit the area as in the days when the Indian used the two caves along the three and one-half mile shoreline for shelter. Artifacts left behind for other to discover lend an aura of mystery to the lake area and one of appreciative heart recalls how high in esteem the Red Man regarded the land of Kentucky.
Drane Scott, whose senses were in tune with nature like the Indian who trod the paths before him, viewed the area with awesome respect. Perhaps he echoed the thoughts of his Indian brothers when he stood gazing at the lake and reverently said, At daybreak, looking at the sky, you are closer to God than anyplace on earth.
Through the kindness of his wife, Ruth, Scotty’s Retreat may now be shared by those who seek autumn enjoyment and is sincerely dedicated to the memory of Drane Scott.
